💧 Ford Explorer 4.0 Engine Problems
Sacramento, CA. Year, Model & Trim Level. 2006 Ford Explorer XLT. May 2, 2017. #1. Okayso I am officially stumped. My explorer is (or maybe I should say "was") in great condition with around 120,000 miles on it. About 6 months ago, the check engine light came on and it is a little sluggish when under 3,000 RPMs.
It's not your valve's. I know exactly waht you are talking about. The noise you are hearing is the timing chain rattling. The 4.0 has 2 timing chains in it. One in the front and one in the back of the motor. 9 times out of 10 it is the front one that rattles like that. If it is still under Factory Warr. take it in and let them do it.
FOURTEN. January 8, 2019. #8. High idle OHV 4.0 is usually #1 intake leaks after the MAS = un metered air and the computer is trying to compensate. #1 suspect is plenum to intake O rings, gasket, followed by vacuum lines and then lower intake gasket leaky.
P0443 indicates a problem with the wiring to/from the purge valve or that the purge valve solenoid has a short/open circuit. It typically won’t affect the way that your Explorer runs. You may smell gas. Most commonly caused by a bad purge valve solenoid. Checking the gas cap may just save a lot of time.
I have a 1993 Volkswagen Jetta for so long and no problems. The 2002 Ford Explorer has 20 problems reported for engine knocking sound. Average repair cost is $3,530 at 128,700 miles.
The first vehicles to receive this engine were the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer; years later, they began production for vehicles like the Ford Ranger, Courier, Mustang, Mazda B4000, and Land Rover LR3. A rebuilt 4.0-long block that uses the bare minimum of quality parts can end up causing problems down the road.
Year, Model & Trim Level. 2003 Lincoln. June 18, 2014. #8. The more I look into this injector bore "insert" the more I believe it is a manufactured insert. This engine which I believe should have been a standard 4.0 for the 2 wheel drive Explorer has the balance shaft which I keep hearing is only used in 4 X 4 models.
Problems #2: Rough Idle And Stalling. Rough idle and stalling are amongst the Ford Explorer problems that can damage the car severely. The intake manifold O-ring gaskets could start to leak and thus create a vacuum leak. By design, the O-ring gaskets seal off multiple parts, forming the perfect lock.

Replace the line if it’s damaged. Test the Fuel Pressure: Connect a fuel pressure gauge to your Explorer’s fuel rail. Activate the fuel pump (without starting the engine) and observe the pressure reading. The pressure should match your vehicle’s specified range. Perform a Vacuum Test: Start the engine and let it idle.

Here is a photo of the correct tube for a '97/'98 SOHC and another showing how it's routed under the intake manifold. Note the straight section of tubing is zip tied to the underside of the right side of the intake manifold at the rear. Also note, this is correct for the style IAC used on '97/'98.
Yes, undo the nut, spin the whole fan and clutch off, but also undo the 8mm bolt holding the harness, unplug it and get it out of the way. Remove the upper half of the shroud. It will give you lots of space and it will pay off. E.
